List of common medical expenses you can claim.
In Canada, you can claim various medical expenses on your tax return to reduce your taxable income. Here is a list of common eligible medical expenses that you can claim with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA):
Common Eligible Medical Expenses:
- Prescription medications – Must be prescribed by a doctor and purchased from a licensed pharmacy.
- Dental services – Examinations, cleanings, fillings, extractions, and orthodontics (excluding cosmetic procedures like teeth whitening).
- Vision care – Prescription eyeglasses, contact lenses, and laser eye surgery.
- Medical equipment and devices – Hearing aids, wheelchairs, CPAP machines, crutches, prosthetic limbs, etc.
- Medical services – Fees paid to medical professionals such as doctors, dentists, chiropractors, physiotherapists, psychologists, and naturopaths.
- Hospital services – Private hospital room fees, surgeries, and specialized treatments not covered by provincial health plans.
- Nursing home and home care services – Including care provided by a licensed nurse or attendant.
- Fertility treatments – IVF and other assisted reproductive technologies.
- Travel expenses for medical treatment – If you had to travel over 40 km (one way) for medical care not available locally, you can claim transportation costs, and if over 80 km, you can claim accommodation and meals.
- Gluten-free products – If you have celiac disease, you can claim the cost difference between gluten-free and regular products.
- Service animals – Expenses related to guide dogs for individuals with disabilities, including food and veterinary care.
- Medical cannabis – Must be prescribed and purchased from a licensed producer.
- Attendant care and therapy – Services for individuals with disabilities, including speech therapy, occupational therapy, and personal care assistance.
- Mobility aids – Walkers, canes, orthopedic shoes, and braces.
- Health insurance premiums – If paid out-of-pocket for private health insurance (excluding employer-paid premiums).
Important Notes:
✅ You can only claim eligible medical expenses that you or your dependents paid for during the tax year.
✅ There is a minimum threshold: Your total medical expenses must exceed the lesser of 3% of your net income or $2,635 (for 2023 tax year) to be eligible for a tax credit.
✅ Keep all receipts and supporting documents in case of a CRA review.
